What exactly is a contemporary kitchen? Well the word contemporary in this sense means cutting edge and up to date. You just need to think what about what looks modern these days.
Fitted kitchens that include glossy coloured doors or dark wooden tones would initially spring to mind. Stainless steel up to date appliances that are high tech looking. You might even be thinking of glossy black or bright coloured appliances and don’t forget that modern item, essential in today's contemporary kitchen - the wine cooler, surely this is a must in a modern kitchen. If you don’t like the black or coloured appliances then silver or stainless steel still look great, and will go with just about any contemporary design.
If you have the room, then island units look extremely good in contemporary kitchens but they’re not absolutely essential.
Be prepared to spend quite a bit of money on the most modern and chic contemporary kitchens as getting the look right can sometimes be expensive.
Large American fridges with ice makers,, incorporated into the design with wrap around tall units, are definitely in today and what a luxury they are! However they do take up some space, so again, like the island units, you will probably need a large kitchen to take one.
Always think stainless steel when selecting handles or even consider cupboard doors that have built-in handles as part of the design, all of these types of design are typical of contemporary kitchens.
What really sets off today’s contemporary kitchens are granite or quartz worktops. These look absolutely fantastic but are very expensive to purchase and require fitting by a specialist which will also comes at a cost, but if you’re planning on installing a contemporary kitchen then the cost should be further down the list than other considerations. If you don’t want the look and feel of granite or quartz then look at solid wood tops, these again look superb but also come at a high cost.
What type of floor finish is very much a personal choice. Tiles or good quality vinyl flooring such as Amtico or Karndean are possibly the best option for a kitchen but if your going for a glossy look why not consider a high gloss tile, these look particularly beautiful in cream or black.
Choosing some good mood lighting can help complete the look your going for, lights in glass cupboards and plinth lights really give an elegant feel.
You will also want to think about your wall and ceiling finishes to create the proper look of contemporary kitchens, here you will want to think clean sharp lines, flat plastered walls with upstands on the worktops. Think carefully about the choice of lceiling ighting that you fit, again there is a lot of choice when considering this.
