Kitchen islands are a great way to gain additional worktop space and storage to your fitted kitchen design. An island can be as simple as a single unit sat in the middle of the kitchen or an elaborate custom built range of cupboards incorporating sinks, hobs and integrated appliances.

A kitchen island, providing there is enough space, will look beautiful in most settings and adds to the social appeal of the design.  When deciding to incorporate an island you must plan it meticulously.  Will it require plumbing, gas, electrics?   Can the floor be opened up to hide these services?  A Lifestyle Kitchens’ designer can create an island that not only looks good but functions well during the cooking process.  Oh, and they’re great for gatherings at parties!

Kitchen Island Units

This very large and grand island not only looks stunning but also acts as the main cooking area of this beautifully crafted kitchen design. A ceramic hob is sited directly opposite the oven towers and to the left is sited a concave wok hob. There is even a microwave housed within.

From this elevation you will notice that both sides of this island incorporate usable cupboard space, plus some attractive glazed doors and a combination wine rack and open unit.  You will also notice that the granite worktop has been shaped to form a useful breakfast bar area.

This high gloss white Duleek kitchen has layout made good use of the wide open floor area oin this room.  In this design the island serves both as a breakfast bar and useful storage space. Note the inset design feature and overhanging granite top to incorporate the stools.

From this view you really get a feel for the size of this island. Full size base units are sited back-to-back and as the island can be seen from the living area frosted, illuminated glass doors form a wonderful introduction into the kitchen. This truly is a friendly, social fitted kitchen design.

By knocking two rooms into one we have created a fantastic open space in which to really show off the full impact of this gloss black fitted kitchen. By removing the middle wall a superb island unit has been incorporated allowing for social seating and without loosing storage.

By dropping the height of this specially prepared Corian worktop the island unit has taken on yet another dimension.  Chairs, not stools are now used and a design distinction is made from the preparation area to the eating area. The two tone worktop colour also helps to define this.

A very bold statement is made with this unusual island design formed using narrow curved units at one end and a much wider double sink unit at the other. The resulting difference in widths has allowed for a breakfast bar design feature, almost triangular in shape formed from granite.

Another idea is to form two tall island units as shown here then span the gap with a slightly lowered worktop space.  The design is copied in the cooking area with two tall midi height units either end of the hob space. In this example the island is truly inspiring with a combination of glazed units, built in sink, breakfast bar and a fantastic lighting effect beneath.
